Betazed Matte Painting

This highly detailed painting has a common feature used in many matte backgrounds: a patch of painted black on the bottom half. This enabled special effects artists to splice in the live-action footage of Riker and Troi that was filmed at the Huntington Library Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, California. The matte painting was accomplished in mixed media on 71" x 42" glass in a pine frame. It was painted by Robert Stromberg of Illusion Arts.

Used in the scene on the planet Betazed in the Star Trek: TNG season three episode #172 “Ménage à Troi” which aired the week of May 28, 1990. The Enterprise attended the biennial Trade Agreements Conference on Betazed. This painting portrayed a secluded spot in the greenbelt of a 24th century Betazed city. Lush plants surrounded this undeveloped area, and a dirt path led off into dense foliage. Riker and Troi were in the scene looking for something in the greenery.
