Boraalan Oil Lamp

The lamp is composed of two three-dimensional hexagonal edges made of metallic brown plastic, a tubular orange and fibrous red translucent fiberglass core, and a metallic brown metal handle encased in light brown leather. Illumination is activated by pressing a button located on one of the hexagonal edges. The lamp is 18 ½ in. x 9 in. x 7 in.

Seen in the Star Trek: TNG season seven episode #265 “Homeward,” which aired the week of January 17, 1994.  The Boraalan oil lamp was used to establish the atmosphere of their village and to represent the culture of the Boraalans, a pre-industrial species, during their interaction with Worf. It was depicted as a rustic, alien artifact providing flickering light within the village camp. The lamp appeared during the storyline where the Enterprise-D crew attempted to save a portion of the Boraalan population from their planet's atmospheric destruction by placing them in the holodeck to transport them to another plant. The villagers were largely unaware of the technologically advanced world around them, often mistaking the holodeck’s artificial elements for natural phenomena or omens, sometimes interpreted as "the sign of La Forge."Don Coleman April 22, 2026.
