Data’s Positronic Headpiece

Worn by Brent Spiner as Data in the Star Trek: TNG season seven episode #268 “Thine Own Self,” which aired the week of February 14, 1994. Data crashed on the primitive planet Barkon IV and suffered amnesia from a head wound that exposed part of his mechanical innards, which lead him to wander into a village where his radioactive probe fragments inadvertently caused a radiation epidemic. While locals, including magistrate Garvin and his daughter Gia, tried to understand the mysterious "iceman," Data used his retained scientific knowledge to identify the radioactive fragments as the source of the illness and cured the villagers. The plastic left side head piece is held on by elastic straps. It consists of a light gray plastic form fitting piece embellished with silver, black and gold tape, a raised black and silver device with a silver ring, multicolored wire, resistors, and red, green, and yellow LED lights. The piece was attached to Brent Spiner’s left chin, cheek and head area and blended into his faces with makeup. Tom Spina made the display using a cast Data bust altered to allow him to mount the piece. He added hair and mounting materials and then painted it to match the effect from the episode.
