Troi wore civilian attire, including various colored jumpsuits, because she wanted to create a more approachable atmosphere for the crew to feel comfortable confiding in her as the ship's counselor. After the events of "Chain of Command," she began wearing it regularly while on duty. Troi was promoted to Commander in the seventh season episode "Thine Own Self" when she successfully passed the Bridge Officer's test.
