Dixon Hill was a 20th century fictional detective who was the lead character in the Dixon Hill series of novels as well as their later film and holonovel adaptations. He was a childhood hero of Jean-Luc Picard. Picard was able to explore his fascination with Dixon Hill following the upgrade of the Enterprise holodecks in 2364. Hill’s adventures were set in San Francisco, California, in1941. In “The Big Goodbye” Picard, Data, Dr. Crusher and Whalen, the ship's historian, were trapped when the holodeck malfunctioned. Whalen was killed and Picard, Data and Crusher were held at gunpoint by gangsters. As Wesley's completed repairs, the passageway back to the starship materialized which allowed Picard to trick the criminals into entering the passageway, where their fabricated images instantly dematerialized. Upon returning safely to the ship, Picard successfully executed the Jaradan greeting, allowing the Enterprise to pass through Korona IV quadrant without incident.
