The paperback book (4 ¼ in. x 7 in. 1 ¼ in.) has a color cover of a hotel (Circus Maximus Showroom at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas) with all edges stained yellow. The production made cover was placed over “Patty Hearst: Her own story,” 1988. The book was distressed to look old. It was screen matched.
Held by Jonathan Frakes as Commander Riker in the Star Trek: TNG season two episode #138 “The Royale,” which aired the week of March 27, 1989. The Enterprise investigated the wreckage of a 21st-century Earth spacecraft on a desolate planet. Commander Riker, Data, and Worf beamed down and discovered a surreal environment resembling a 20th-century Earth casino, based on a poorly written novel called “Hotel Royale.” They realized they were trapped in a simulation created by alien beings, intended to provide a livable environment for a lone astronaut from the wrecked ship who had been inadvertently stranded there. By playing along with the casino's scripted events and "beating the house," the team navigated their way out of the bizarre scenario and safely returned to the Enterprise. This is the book that served as the basis of the simulation.
