The scanner is a resin instrument with a circular head and a rotating molded resin sensor ring in the center.

Used by Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher on Captain Picard on the Enterprise bridge in the Star Trek: TNG season five episode #225 “The Inner Light,” which aired the week of June 1, 1992.  In this beloved episode an alien probe emits a nucleonic beam that knocks Picard unconscious and threatens his life. Before recovering he lives over thirty years on Kataan with a wife and two children. When he wakes, he realizes the probe was launched by the inhabitants to bring them immortality by telling others about their planet after it was destroyed.  The scanner was first prominently featured in the season two episode “Shades of Gary” when it was used on Commander Riker by Dr. Pulaski. The scanner is a resin instrument painted gray with a circular head with black and white accents and a rotating black and silver molded resin lighted sensor ring in the center.
