Nanite

The prop is made of layers of sheet plastic and styrene and has been painted silver.

This life form was seen on a monitor through a microscope camera in the Star Trek: TNG  season three episode #150 “Evolution,” which aired the week of September 25, 1989.  The nanites were accidentally allowed to interact and were released by Wesley Crusher while conducting an advanced genetics experiment. Once released they became a civilization capable of intelligent thought and took over the Enterprise computer.  The disaster was averted after Data established communication with the nanites. The prop is made of layers of sheet plastic and styrene of various shapes and sizes and has been painted silver.  Propworx Star Trek Auction VI, Lot 83, August 9, 2015 – Collection of Gary Hurtzel.
