Used by Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher in the Star Trek: TNG season five episode #206 “The Game,” which aired the week of October 28, 1991. A type-1 phaser was the smallest weapon carried by Starfleet. Type-1 phasers were typically carried when it would be inappropriate to carry a larger weapon, such as on diplomatic missions, or undercover work. It had eight adjustable settings, ranging from stun to disintegration. The type-1’s could be programmed to fire automatically at set intervals as Wesley did in “The Game.” It was designed by Rick Sternbach and nicknamed the "Cricket." It was rarely used after the first season of TNG because Gene Roddenberry felt it was so minuscule that it was hardly visible on screen. Nonetheless, this iteration later appeared in season four and five -- "The Mind's Eye", and "The Game.” The phaser is made of cast resin painted silver, bronze and dark gray with amber clear acrylic covers for the emitter window and the photon spill ports, two copper beam controls, and a silver foil trigger. The power level indicator is translucent alternating white and green. The phaser illuminates by pressing a copper beam control. 3.25” x 1.7”.
